District Attorney Investigator Shares Information From His Experience to Prevent Sexual Assaults

04 Apr District Attorney Investigator Shares Information From His Experience to Prevent Sexual Assaults

District Attorney Investigator Gary Stansill has decades of law enforcement experience including nine years as a sex crimes investigator for the Tulsa Police Department where he also supervised the Child Crisis Unit for five years and supervised the Sex Crime Unit for eight years.

Some of the information Stansill wants people to know:

*More than 85% of sexual assaults are committed by a non-stranger.
*Alcohol and/or drugs are involved in 75% of sexual assaults.
*A victim can get a free sexual assault exam without filing a police report (called a non-report exam)
*Victims are encouraged to report.  The majority of sex offenders will commit the crime over and over; reporting could prevent someone else from becoming a victim.
*Ask for help.  Safenet offers a 24 hour crisis line to help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence:  (888) 372-9400.  Save the number into your phone now in case you, or someone you know, need it later.
* Sex offenders will target their victims based on vulnerability, accessibility and credibility.
