Eric Coager was sentenced January 23, 2017 after pleading guilty last November to two counts of first degree manslaughter and one count DUI – great bodily injury.
On September 30, 2015 Eric Coager smoked marijuana and drank whiskey before driving with Angela Brown, 32 years old, and her two young sons in his car. He’d previously removed the seat belts from his back seat a witness told investigators “because he did not want others riding back there”. The crash killed Angela and her eleven year old son. Her younger son, who will turn ten next month, survived but is permanently scarred.
Just before handing down sentence the Judge noted in his 19 years on the bench the problem of DUI continues to get worse. He sentenced Coager to 22.5 years in prison plus 12.5 years on DOC probation after release.
Before sentencing the ADA noted given the facts in the case a jury would have no problem handing down a life sentence which was the prosecutor’s sentencing recommendation. Coager previously waived preliminary hearing and jury trial.
Coager also received credit for time served. He’s been in the Rogers County Jail for 16 months and eight days.
