District Attorney Praises Successful First Year of Rogers County Veterans Court

12 Feb District Attorney Praises Successful First Year of Rogers County Veterans Court

ROGERS COUNTY, Okla., January 2014 marks the one year anniversary of Veterans Court in Rogers County.   It is the third largest Veterans Court in Oklahoma.

For many veterans the battles fought while serving our country overseas will follow them home.  And trying to get back to normal can seem impossible.  Many suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other medical issues.   Addictions can develop from attempts to self-medicate the stress, recurring nightmares and anxiety.

Admission to our Veterans Court is not automatic.

The Rogers County Veterans Court is modeled after the nationally recognized Tulsa County Veterans Court launched in 2008 which boasts a 96% success rate.  That shows the vast majority of veterans who graduate from Veterans Court do not reoffend.

The 12th District comprised of Craig, Mayes and Rogers counties supports several alternative courts including Drug Court, Anna McBride Court, Community Sentencing, Juvenile Drug Court, DUI Court and Veterans Court.

Nationally alternative court programs have been proven to reduce recidivism and improve the entire community by making the participants accountable for their actions while helping them, again, become productive members of society.
